3kW or 5kW? How to pick the right solar system size

The right system size depends on one number you already know: your monthly electricity bill. Each kilowatt of solar generates about 4.5 units a day — roughly ₹1,080 of electricity a month at MP tariffs — so the working rule is one kilowatt for every ₹1,000–1,100 of monthly bill.

The quick math

A ₹3,200 monthly bill points to about 3 kW. A ₹5,400 bill points to about 5 kW. Every kW needs roughly 100 sq ft of shadow-free roof, and a 3 kW system saves about ₹3,240 a month — ₹38,880 a year.

Why not just go as big as possible?

Because the subsidy is capped at 3 kW (₹78,000 maximum), and net-metering pays less for surplus power than the power you avoid buying. Beyond your actual usage, extra panels take longer to pay for themselves. Bigger is only better if your usage is genuinely growing — an AC being added, an EV coming.
